What are the uses and implications of genre for producers and audiences?
How is genre used by institutions/ media producers?
Genre is used by "Television producers [to] exploit genre conventions". Like Nicolas Abercrombie states in that quotation, producers use genres to make the most of the guidelines and rules set out before them. They take advantage of the set out conventions fully, this then eliminates the risk of the media product failing or not fitting their target audience already supplied. However with this repetitive use of guidelines then comes the implication that the TV drama becomes mainstream, it is no longer original. The producer has followed the same routine as the producer before him. Christine Gredhill similarly states that "Genre can be seen as 'means of controlling demand'" this statement emphasises the idea that by using the genre to is full potential and by controlling the demand of it you have a secure and certified audience, you have a stable flow of viewers. However it can be said the downfall of using a specific genre and the rules that come with that disables the chance of creative expression into your work as a producer.
How is genre used by audiences?
As an audience when say attending the cinema it is suggested that you have a set film genre you go to see. Depending on mood you may have a specific music genre to listen to to accompany how you are feeling. "Genres permit the creation and maintenance of a loyal audience which becomes used to seeing programmes within a genre". Gledhill states that an audience stays loyal knowing what they are going to get, and get it. An example of this is 'Star Wars', one of the biggest fan bases in film, a fan goes to see the film knowing it will be a Sci-Fi or at least an action hybrid. Like stated in the producer section their is a dependency on following the genre conventions for the controlling of audience attendance. Another use of genre for audience is the ideas of Identity, Community and diversion, it allows the audience member to envision this certain life, and divert them from certain groups, whom may favourite a different genre.
How are genres shifting and permeable?
Genres are shifting and permeable because it can be argued that there would be a constant increase of audience members. For instance if a film is a hybrid genre of action and romance, the target audience would not only be a variety of ages but both female and male audience members would enjoy it. It increases more creative ideas and opportunities to be expressed within the media, if the production team does not have to fit into a specific genre it can then shift into other genres.
