Analysing music videos using Andrew Goodwin's theory

Metronomy - The Bay :

This video uses in my opinion 5 out of the 6 analysis points from Goodwin's theory. The first being it provides quirky low key dance moves from both the band and the female performers alongside them (see image 1) but also the fact that the band synchronises when all are on screen. The video secondly fits the second analysis point even from the first 30 seconds of the song and video. The first few lines of lyrics state the theme of money and wealth, with that being accompanied by a birds-eye pan of Torquay Bay (see image 2), it makes the location look appealing and picturesque. The third analysis point in Goodwin's theory is also touched upon by the fact that the fast pace, quirky camera shots correlate with the 4/4 beat; making this video appealing to the eye. Another element of this video is the consistent close up centralised shot on the artists (see image 3) it allows the audience a chance to be closer to the music they are listening, almost as if they are seeing the band live, its right in front of them.

Jorja Smith - Beautiful Little Fools

The beautiful little fools video by Jorja Smith I believe uses four of the points in Goodwins theory. The first most prominently being points two and three. Jorja is very much so at the beginning the passive female protagonist and performer, she sits by the male characters, almost in ore of them, however like the lyrics address, where is the empowerment in young females? The lyrics for me suggest women that are passive to the man, stand up and do you. I believe Jorja's way of addressing this was by being shown as the women to just sit by her man, and then by the chorus, she transitions from being that 'fool' to an independent women, this is done whilst she lip syncs (see images 1 and 2). The music is slow and relaxed and the camera work correlates, the panning is a slow draw around Jorja as she walks, sings and acts and on occasion the video will cut as the structure of the song changes, from verse to chorus or chorus to bridge. A third point the video includes is point 4. There are frequent close ups of Jorja Smith within this video, they focus so exactly on her as she lip syncs, but the focus on her also allows the audience to see her emotion as she sings the devoted lyrics. This can also be explained as to showing the audience her beauty, the connection she can make with the audience if you were ever to watch her live.
